The awesome elephant sanctuary

After leaving the island of Koh Lanta ,we took a plane to Chiang Mai from Krabi ( the not so busy ) airport. I personally I didn’t like the Air Asia flights because it was a small plane and it was a little bit bumpy, the staff were all great and all that but the thing I didn’t exactly like was the take off and landing when we set off from Krabi and landed in Chiang Mai.

On our second day in Chiang Mai we got picked up from our hotel in a big mini bus to go to an elephant sanctuary, this specific elephant sanctuary doesn’t let you ride the elephants, in fact all of these elephants have been either rescued or bought by the elephant sanctuary’s owner (Lin). Some of the unfortunate elephants had stepped in a land mine and their wounds were still healing. Our guide, Ya, it means medicine in Thai language) told us that we would have a specific rota to keep to so that all the visitors got a chance to:

  • Feed one elephant
  • Have a knowledge lesson about elephants
  • See a few baby elephants
  • Wash an elephant

I found the elephant knowledge interesting but my favourite part was washing an elephant, the way we washed the elephant was by getting a cold bucket of water and throwing it over the humungously giant like elephant. It was nice and refreshing because we had a water fight. It was a great experience seeing elephants up close, although it was good to get back to the hotel to relax at the end of a long hot day.

I am so glad you enjoyed washing the elephants and especially the water fight. You keep rubbing it in how you need to cool down after a hot day. I am sat here putting another jumper on to keep warm. Haha. Love nana gwen xx
