Beaches and a day at school

Beaches and a day at school

Today we went to the Unawatuna school in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰. We all got lots of high fives from the children who attended the school, we had to board a van with 2, 18 year olds because they taught at the school that we were going to. When we got there the English teachers (who were from England but had only been there for 4 months! And had all ready learnt how to count to 10 in Sinhalese!!!!!!! )  Their names were Megan and Natalie they were really nice .

Our first class was grade 3 (the grades are exactly the same as the classes that we use in England but some people in the class are soooo tiny that they only come up to your waist , one little girl was 7 years old but only came up to Arlo’s chin and he is only six years old. ) The grade 3’s were really good at drama so they showed us how they sang Old Macdonald had a Farm, it was great because they had lots of different actions with them as well, they repeated it lots and lots again with a help from a poster that we brought in showing them the different animals that they could use to sing the  song. So we went over to grade 3 classroom where all the chairs were really really really small,  luckily we got to sit on a window sill and Natalie and Megan introduced us to the class. All of the children were really enthusiastic and all of them joined in with my Penguin Song which helped with my confidence a lot.

Arlo showed them how to do paper planes and everybody enjoyed it, you could see it in their eyes, once Arlo had finished his paper plane making with the class they all stood up on the  stage and Arlo counted down “3,2,1 go” all of the children threw their  paper planes across the classroom, Natalie and Megan told them not to run and grab their paper planes – did any of them listen, no they didn’t. I collected the winners of the paper plane competition it wasn’t much of a throw from the winner but it did get him a gold star ⭐️.
Then we went to the grade 2’s classroom, these guys were really really tiny. It was quite hard explaining it to them because they had not learnt much  English in the past year or so because they were only in year 2/grade 2 all of them like doing the actions to my Penguin Song but couldn’t really get their heads around the words. Lots of them like doing their own design model of the paper planes when Arlo was trying to teach them but they all flew very well. After that it was kind of an interval play time, Natalie ran around with the children up and down the hill it was really fun because everybody was just running around having a great time, it was great to see the kids playing playfully, then everybody went back to the classrooms and we ventured on to grade 4, all of the people were much taller than me, but most of them were only eight years old.

When I was doing the Penguin Song, not many of the boys joined in , They probably thought they were too cool for it, most of them looked quite uncomfortable,  all of the girls, well most of them anyway, looked like they were enjoying it, all of them weren’t exactly participating with the silliness of it.
That was the end of the school day everybody gave us high-fives, all of the little kids had already gone home because school starts at 7:30 and ends at 1:30 in the afternoon because of how hot is the afternoon they leave quite early in order to get home and out of the heat. Then we got the bus home, if you think that your car is like a rollercoaster at home you should check out tuck tucks and buses in Sri Lanka, the bus drivers are absolutely crazy they overtake on the bends and they beep for any random reason.
I heard about the fire at Chinley school. It all seemed really exciting with the fire at school although it wouldn’t of been nice to be in the situation at the time.
All of the beaches are really nice, I am already  sun burnt because I am always in the water. Hope you are all having a really boring time at home in Chinley/Chapel/Combs/Buxton/Hayfield/New Mills/Eyam/Loughborough/London/Droylsden
