Colombo, Sri Lanka

Business idea no.1…Tuktuks in Chinley. We’ve spent the last 8 months researching, child car seats, child safety rules in different countries, top end insurance for our trip, safety this, safety that, then we go and squeeze the four of us into a bloody tuktuk which is basically a 125cc moped with a cart on the back – in the busiest city in Sri Lanka where there’s only one rule of the road…that’s…there are no rules. Everybody abides by this important rule so it works just fine.

Everyone is really friendly, so friendly in fact that I’m doubting their authenticity and wondering are they all just trying to blag us. Our good friend Emma Sykes warned us that the Sri Lankans like to ‘touch’ the kids, not in a pervy way, just in a friendly inquisitive way, some shake hands politely, some touch their heads, some gently brush a hand over their shoulder, it comes from both men and women, young and old. Henna and Arlo are coping fine at the mo with this new found attention but I’m keeping my beady eye on it. John and I have a natural in built suspicion of everyone and our prejudice is heightened when it’s a man that strokes them compared to when a women reaches out.

The kids were looking forward to ‘curry for breakfast’ in SL but got bored quickly after the Emirates feast/ feed, so we’ve opted for an American brekkie up to now (white bread and fried eggs).

The heat is astonishing and we are sweating like racehorses here, 33*. Today was temples, a National Museum, Pettah Market and Independence Square. It is also New Years Eve and a full moon.

3 days in Colombo has been a real eye opener and we are looking forward to our next destination tomorrow which is 9 days in a beach town (Unawatuna)

Happy NEW Year! We’ve just been part of the (hotel’s) family traditional new year celebration which involves and overflowing pot of boiling milk.

    PS loving Henna’s short hair!

Yes, she really suits it, she had it cut in September but has since decided to grow it again… meanwhile, I want to go short, you are my inspiration on this.

At least they’re not trying to hug you 😉
It’s amazing the cultural differences & you are lucky to encounter many. Embrace them (if possible without hugging!)
Loving the posts… have a fantastic year all of you xx

We’ve not had one yet. Getting a little feed up with curry for breakfast so we’ve bought a £6 bag of porridge!

I forgot about the ‘touching kids’ they are very much the same in Thailand.
So blonde so blonde was all they’d say as they reached and touched Luca’s hair!

All in very kind spirits x
